The Surrogate by Louise Jensen

I got hooked on this book from the moment I started reading it. The script kept changing I would always be caught off guard by my expectations. The book gets better and better as it progresses with twists and turns and the ending unexpected. This is the first book I have read by Louise Jensen. I loved the writing style, the plot and character development.

You when you read about a character, you start getting used to them. As you grow into to them, getting used to them then bam! Surprise, you know absolutely nothing. As the story develops between past and presents you get reveals of things they did that keep surprising you.

Kat and Nick are a married couple struggling to conceive. After several unsuccessful attempts, they try adoption twice and fail. Kat meets Lisa, her childhood friend whom they have been out of touch for many years. They parted ways on a sad note. While the two reconnect, Lisa brings up her challenge of not being able to conceive. Lisa offers to become a surrogate. I really empathized with Kat in her efforts to have a child of her own.

I was intrigued by how the secrets kept being revealed. Keeping me on edge throughout the book. Did Nick and Kat finally succeed in getting a baby they so desperately wanted? You would have to read to find out.

This was a brilliantly written psychological thriller. Motherhood is the overall theme and we see this through Kat and Lisa. Kat struggling and getting desperate to have a child of her own and Lisa being a surrogate mother. In between, we get a glimpse of their past lives that come alive in the present and in the past – surprising us.

‘You know that feeling? When you want something so badly, you almost feel you’d kill for it?’

Be careful what you wish for…

Kat and her husband Nick have tried everything to become parents, and are on the point of giving up. Then a chance encounter with Kat’s childhood friend Lisa gives Kat and Nick one last chance to achieve their dream.

But Kat and Lisa’s history hides dark secrets.

And there is more to Lisa than meets the eye.

As dangerous cracks start to appear in Kat’s perfect picture of happily-ever-after, she realises that she must face her fear of the past to save her family- Goodreads
