The Church of Philadelphia

Text: Revelation 3:7-13

Introduction (Citam Buru Buru)

The Christian walk in the world today is that of going against the current in our struggle against the devil, the flesh and the systems of the world. The pressure of these can make it challenging to remain true to the teachings of the gospel, persevere during trials and do the good works we have been called to do (Ephesians 2:10) given that we are called to take the narrow path (Matthew 7:13-14).

However, the message of Jesus in this letter proves the words of Apostle Paul that the One who calls us is faithful (1 Thessalonians 5:24) and that commitment is rewarded (Heb. 11:6) since He has clearly stated His commitment to honor those who remain true to this calling in spite of the trials and opposition. These are what Peter calls His very great and precious promises” by which we escape the corruption that is in world we live in (2 Peter 1:4); which help us to look forward to spending eternity that He has gone ahead to prepare for us (John 14:2-3).

With the open door that He declares to the Philadelphian church, there is no better motivation for righteous living than this letter. In our study this week, we remind ourselves of the hope that our faith offers us in the text and its importance in helping us to effectively witness to the world that the Christian faith is a worthwhile journey towards this promised eternity.

Jesus showed his commitment to the church in Philadelphia that he would make those who claimed to be Jews and they were not, come and fall down at their feet and acknowledge that Jesus loved them. He also promised to keep them away from the hour of trial. He promised to keep them in the temple of the Lord. He finally promised to write them his new name.

The open door in this letter is the door to heaven which cannot be shut. We should seek encourage others that heave is open for all who trust and believe in Jesus Christ. Also Jesus is an open door, we have salvation and the gateway to heaven through Christ Jesus. The open door is also our lives and how we are given the opportunity to live our life for Christ with no limitations

Some of the hindrances that the church has placed people from coming to the kingdom include the leadership acting contrary to what the bible says, congregants also living a life that is contrary to that of the Christian faith. The underlying theme in all these messages to the 7 churches is for the church to be bold and strong in its message about Jesus Christ. Standing firm in my faith in Christ is take home from the message to this church.
